Marilynne Robinson
Lila
As part of a wandering band of the unhoused during the 1930s, and largely uncared for since childhood, Lila arrives in the small midwestern town of Gilead and has an unlikely love affair with Reverend John Ames. What’s remarkable about this novel is Lila’s narrative voice and interiority. As she settles into the safety of life in Gilead, her traumatic life history is revealed little by little via her sudden mental lapses and interior wanderings. This is the third novel in Robinson’s Gilead series.
