The events of this epic novel, set in post-revolutionary Russia, largely take place in one location: Hotel Metropol, the gorgeous Moscow hotel in which a Russian aristocrat is imprisoned by the Communist Party. Because the main character is confined to the hotel, the reader’s imagination is largely confined to that single setting; nevertheless, Towles writes a story that involves intrigue and suspense, compassion and sacrifice.​
